Two local high schools wrestlers are determined to defend the state championships that they won last season.
Cy-Fair High senior Jake Ekster (130 pound boys champion) and Cy Creek High junior Anna McAleavey (128 pound girls champion) made history last season, and they’ll look to keep doing that this winter.
Ekster became the second Cy-Fair wrestler to win a state title (Austin McCain won state in 2006), and he has the opportunity to be the Bobcats’ first-ever two-time state champion.
“I want to make a statement this year,” Ekster said. “I don’t just want to win it. (I) want to be dominant.”
McAleavey is Cy Creek’s first state wrestling champion, and she’ll have the opportunity to win two more state titles in her career.

Anna and Jordan McAleavey have a sibling rivalry, but the Cy Creek High wrestlers will be encouraging each other to succeed at the UIL State Wrestling Championships on Friday and Saturday in Austin.
The McAleaveys are two of the 26 area wrestlers to qualify for state. Six other wrestlers will go the tournament as alternates.
Anna McAleavey will take a 26-1 record into the state tournament; the sophomore won the district championship earlier this month at 128 pounds.
