Our last article for the season and we had an exciting finish to an incredible year! Our Lady Cougars hosted the Lobos from Langham Creek for the final game of the 2011 season. It was an exciting night as we were celebrating our six graduating seniors, thanking all of the parents, and honoring breast cancer month with our “pink out”. Our Lady Cougars didn’t make the playoffs this season, but wanted to finish out strong and secure our 5th place spot in District. The first set was a slow start for our girls and we found ourselves down early in the game. Coach Combs called for a quick time out and rallied our girls back to their true form, then with a nice service rally of 8 straight points lead by Sarah Price, we took the first set 25-21. The second set was a different story as our Lady Cougars lead the entire set and cruised to a 25-18 victory. The lady Lobos wouldn’t give up though, and came out strong in the third set. There were some long captivating rallies and with great blocking, strategic hitting, exciting digs and amazing teamwork, our girls came away with the 3-0 sweep! Congratulations to Shelby Edmiston for being our kill leader for the night and Sarah Price for surpassing the 600 digs mark for the season. It was a perfect exclamation point to cap off the year.
Our evening ended with a fantastic tribute to the six graduating seniors, Morgan Chenoweth, Danielle Daniels, Shelby Edmiston, Anna Keeling, Sarah Price, and Evan St. Laurent. Thanks for being amazing leaders, teammates and friends. The best of luck to all of you in your future endeavors!

Please forgive me for being so late with this update!!! Our Lady Cougars have played three very exciting matches since our last article.
First on Friday, Oct. 14, our girls had to face the Mustangs at Cy-Ranch. This match would determine our play-off spot, so it was very intense. Our Lady Cougars came out strong and took the first set 25-18. We were playing with a purpose! The girls were so focused and the blocking from the front line was a welcomed addition since the Mustangs have some powerful hitting. The second set was lost to the Mustangs 19-25, to tie up the match. The third set was neck and neck the entire time and our Lady Cougars held on to win it 26-24. Once again, blocking by Dani Fielder and Anna Keeling and some key hits by Morgan Chenoweth at the end of the set were vital to the win! But the Mustangs wouldn’t let up and they took the fourth set 18-25 to tie up the match again and force a fifth set. Our Lady Cougars took a commanding lead, but then the Mustangs pulled it together and had some tough serving and strategic hitting to take the match 9-15. Our Lady Cougars left everything on the court that night. It was a tough loss, especially after the 5 set loss on Wednesday night to Cy-Falls. It was a tough week for the Lady Cougars, but we are all very proud of how they fought for every point and never gave up!
On Tuesday, Oct. 18, our Lady Cougars hosted the Falcons from Jersey Village. Even though we didn’t make the play-offs, our girls still wanted to finish the season strong, and the proved that with a win in 3 sets against the powerful Falcons, 25-14, 25-23, and 25-15. Again, the blocking on the front line proved to be the difference in the victory. Congratulations to Dani Fielder, Anna Keeling, Morgan Chenoweth and Ashlynn Caldwell for a job well done! Also congratulations to Peyton Brown for some nice serving in the match.
Last Friday night, Oct. 21, our girls traveled to Cy-Springs to face the Lady Panthers. The Lady Cougars were just too much for the Panthers as we took the match in three straight sets 25-15, 25-16, and 25-20. It was a nice win for the Lady Cougars and a good opportunity for Coach Combs to play some of our up and coming players!! They all did a great job in the win!
Please join us this Tuesday, Oct. 24 for our last game of the 2011 Season! We will be celebrating a great season, honoring our seniors, and sporting our “pink” in support of Breast Cancer month. Come out and celebrate with us as we cheer our girls to Victory against the Lobos from Langham Creek.
Hope to see you there!

Your lady Cougars are fighting a tough battle in a very strong District! We hosed the Cy-Fair Bobcats Friday night and it was electric in the gym! Congratulations to Anna Keeling for leading the Lady Cougars in kills and Evan St. Laurent did a great job setting to our front line.
Wednesday night, after a long restful weekend, our Lady Cougars came out fighting against the Eagles from Cy-Falls, who are 2nd in District after the first round. After coming out flat in the first set and losing 9-25, you lady Cougars showed us what they are made of and took the second and third sets 29-27 and 25-21. The fourth set was a battle all the way, but the Eagles came from behind to take the set 25-23 to set up a 5th set! The Lady Cougars took a commanding lead, but the Eagles came back to take the set and match with a 13-15 victory. Congratulations to all of our Lady Cougars for continuing to fight and not giving up! It was a great match against a very tough Eagles team. Congratulations to Sarah Price for surpassing the 500 mark for digs on the season! She recorded 34 digs in the match. Congratulations to Anna Keeling for being kill leader for the match!
The winning continued as the Lady Cougars traveled to Katy to take on the girls from Cy-Lakes. Our girls won the first set easily 25-12 thanks to a nice service rally by Morgan Chenoweth to give the Lady Cougars a big lead! The Cougars hung on to win the second set 25-20. With the momentum shifting to the Spartan’s court, they took the third set 21-25. But our Lady Cougars didn’t let that sit long before they came back strong in the 4th set (25-13) to take the match, again with strong serving by Morgan Chenoweth. Congratulations to Morgan for great serving and contributing as kill leader! Sarah Price also recorded 27 digs for the match.

The Varsity Cougars continued action Thursday evening in the Annual Spring Branch ISD Volleyball Tournament. They played extremely tough to beat highly ranked Katy in three sets for the first match (25-22, 27-25, and 25-13). Their defense and passing proved to be the difference, with some incredible saves and great teamwork! After the long match and not much time to recover, the lady Cougars met a strong Austin High School team who outscored our Cougars in a two set match to land them in the Silver bracket again. The tournament continued early Saturday morning where the Cougars met an aggressive team from Clear Brook. After taking the first set 25-18, the lady Cougars found themselves down by 10 in the second set, but came back to tie it up at 21! Cypress Woods middle blocker Sarah Nielsen admitted that her team thinks about keeping its winning streak in district play alive.
The way the Wildcats played in its 17-5A opener against Cypress Creek Tuesday night shows Cy Woods has every intention to stay atop the district.
Cy Woods (13-3, 1-0 in 17-5A) swept Cy Creek (8-5, 0-1) 25-8, 25-12, 25-18 Tuesday at home, making it the 19th consecutive win in 17-5A play. The Wildcats went 18-0 in district play last season and during the 2009-2010 season when they were in 15-5A.

It was hard for Cypress Creek volleyball head coach Tami Combs to point out a turning point or even a key player in Tuesday’s win over Concordia Lutheran.
It truly was a team win in her eyes.
“I would love to say that it was one person who had a key moment, but it wasn’t,” she said. “It was just them staying together. They would come back and have amazing kills on us and we didn’t let that affect us. We came back with a couple more.”

The Cypress-Fairbanks varsity volleyball tournament begins Thursday at various high schools in the area.
The tournament gives teams in District 17-5A a sneak peek at its rivals and even some other top-notch teams outside the district. It’ll be a good chance for teams to see extensive action early in the season, too. The 2011 volleyball season started for area teams on Tuesday.
Games take place at Cypress Springs, Cypress Woods, Langham Creek, Cypress Ridge and Cypress Ranch High School.
