STATE TRACK: Woods' Nowak, Ranch's Wallace finish 1-2 in 3200-meter run

AUSTIN -- A pair of Cy-Fair ISD junior distance runners dominated the Boys 3200 Meter Run at the UIL Class 5A Track & Field Championships on Saturday.
Cy Woods High junior Craig Nowak won the event in 4:08.67 with Cy Ranch High junior Cale Wallace finishing second in 4:09.30.
Nowak and Wallace were the only competitors from Cy-Fair ISD to finish first or second at the state meet; Nowak also placed sixth in the 1600 meter run (9:14.87).
Cy Springs junior Kiersten Duncan placed third in the Girls 200 Meter (23.89), and Cy Creek junior Leslie Schilsky was third in the Girls 300 Hurdles (43.11) and fifth in the 800 (2:16.43).

HUMBLE -- Cy Creek High junior Leslie Schilsky won the 300 meter hurdles at the UIL Region II Track & Field Championships.
Schilsky, who qualified for the Class 5A Cross Country Championships last fall, earned a trip to the UIL Track & Field Championships next Thursday and Friday in Austin with a time of 44.21 seconds.
She also qualified in the 800 meter (2:15.37) by finishing second and led Cy Creek to a sixth place finish at the meet (31.3 points).
The top two competitiors in each event qualify for state.

Before vaulting over 10 feet in the area, Cy Creek High junior Kristen Mitcham finds a way to compete at the top of her game.
“Every time before I jump,” Mitcham said. “I say a Bible verse, and that calms me down.”
Mitcham, a two-time regional qualifier, won the Girls Pole Vault at the Class 5A-District 17 Track & Field Championships on Monday at Cy Ridge track.

Chava Demart-Sadler’s parents, Charles and Avanell, attended the UIL Track & Field Championships at the University of Texas in May and returned home to Cypress with some good news.
Demart-Sadler, a 1998 Cy Creek High graduate, was one of three 300-meter hurdlers named to the UIL All-Century Girls Track & Field Team, along with Saginaw’s Donique Flemings and Cross Plains’ Brandi Richey.

Former Cy Creek 300-meter hurdler Chava Demart was named to the University Interscholastic League’s All-Century Girls Track and Field team.
The team was selected by the fans, who cast more than 3,500 votes for their favorite girls track and field athletes in Texas high school history.
Demart won the state 300 hurdles in 1997 with a time of 41.73, and 1998 with a clocking of 41.01.

After winning a pair of District 15-5A track championships, the Cy Creek Cougars and Lady Cougars have their sights set on the Region II-5A meet on May 3-4 at Baylor Stadium in Waco.
Cy Creek's Lady Cougars scored 176 points to win the District 15-5A meet by 54 points over Cy Woods (122) and 66 over Cy-Fair (113).
“Cy Creek has an excellent team,“ said Cy Woods track coach Mike Zacos. “They should have several girls who have a chance to do well at regionals.“

As soon as the boys 4x400 meter relay finished, every Cy Creek High athlete was jumping for joy and celebrating a rare feat.
The Cy Creek High boys and girls track and field teams swept the Class 5A-District 15 Championship Meet at Cy Falls field.
“We’ve got a great group of seniors,” Cy Creek boys coach Bill Vacek said after his Cougars repeated as district champions; their 2009 title was the first in school history.
