Four Cy-Fair ISD players earn All-State Softball honors

Two Cy Creek High seniors were named to the Texas Sportswriters All-State Softball Team, while a pair of Cy-Fair High underclassmen earned All-State honors from the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
Cy Creek catcher Tori Sheppard was named first-team all-state to the Sportswriters’ All-State team, while Virgil earned honorable mention all-state honors at shortstop; Sheppard and Virgil both earned Division I scholarships to Southeastern Louisiana and Michigan, respectively.

Cy Creek High senior Brandi Virgil has consistently been one of the top softball players in the area.
Her career statistics lead the program in several categories – highest batting average (.420), highest on-base percentage (.547), highest slugging percentage (.675) and most steals (96); she ranks second in extra base hits behind senior teammate Tori Sheppard (49) with 48.
She also had 128 hits, 120 runs scored and 80 RBI in her career.

Cy Woods’ Franks, Cy Creek’s Virgil share 15-5A softball honor
Cy Woods’ Katie Franks and Cy Creek’s Brandi Virgil were named co-MVP’s by the District 15-5A softball coaches.
Cy Woods coach Clif Bond, who guided his team to an undefeated district season, was named the league’s Coach of the Year; Cy Ranch’s Lauren Montgomery was Newcomer of the Year; Cy-Fair’s Jordan Rains was Designated Player of the Year; and Cy Falls’ Samantha Habelow was Utility Player of the Year.

Playoff Softball Roundup: Klein edges New Caney, 2-1

The Klein High softball team earned a 2-1 victory over New Caney in the opening round game of a best-of-three first-round playoff series on Friday night at KHS field.
Kelly Hanzel pitched a complete game and scored a run in the third inning; Alyssa Bross scored the other run. Mariah Shipley’s RBI single was the game-winning hit.
The Lady Bearkats, the No. 2 seed from Class 5A-District 13, trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the third.

The Cy Creek and Cy Springs high school softball teams clinched their respective playoff spots on Tuesday night, joining District 15 champion Cy Woods and Cy-Fair.
Woods, Fair and Creek all reached the playoffs last season; Springs lost a three-team tiebreaker to Cy Falls (Jersey Village tied Springs and Falls, but they didn’t qualify either).

Cy Creek High senior Brandi Virgil brings a little bit of everything to the Lady Cougars softball team.
After leading the Lady Cougars to back-to-back district co-championships, Virgil is looking for her team to get in stride for another run.
“So far this season has been awesome because we have seen the team make progress,” Virgil said. “We were missing players here and there and the season started off rough, but recently we started coming together as a team.”

The Cy-Fair High softball team completed one of the biggest upsets in the nation last season when they eliminated Klein Oak in the second round of the playoffs.
The Lady Bobcats had finished third in Class 5A-District 15, and they were facing an undefeated team that was ranked No. 1 in two national polls; Klein Oak also had five Division I signees.
