All-Greater Houston: Girl's Soccer
April 21, 2010
By Jenny Dial
Houston Chronicle

Kylie Cook, Woodlands

A lot of people thought McKinney Boyd would win the state title. Did you ever doubt your team's chances?

Not at all. We kind of liked being the underdog and having something to prove. I don't think we felt any pressure at state, so that was great. And winning it was just amazing.

You are part of an athletic family. (Sister Kara was Diver of the Year in 2007 and sister Kassidy in 2010). How did you decide to stick with soccer?

I played everything. We all tried a lot of sports and ended up really focusing on one. I actually really liked softball when I was little, and my softball coach suggested I try soccer. I was fast and had a lot of energy.

Clear Lake established control in the second half of a 2-0 win Friday over host Cypress Creek.

The two teams had played to a scoreless tie in an opening round game of the I-10 Shootout last weekend.

Friday's first half followed much the same pattern, with neither offense getting many opportunities.

Better passing by Clear Lake and a couple of key injuries to Cy Creek opened the game in the second half.

The teams played to a 2-2 tie in regulation.

“We worked on (the shootout) in practice,” Cypress Creek coach Kathy Fling said. “I figured it might be a really close game. Michelle is such an awesome goalkeeper.”

Cougar girls aim at another title

Jan. 5, 2010
By Todd Hveem, Chronicle Correspondent

Cy Creek girls' soccer coach Kathy Fling was thrilled when the University Interscholastic League decided to let high school teams start practicing right after Thanksgiving a few years ago.

But at Cy Creek, most of the players never stop practicing. If they aren't playing school soccer, they are playing for various club teams.

“Half my team just went to Miami for a (Challenge) club tournament,“ said Fling. “If they aren't with us (at the high school), they are with their club teams.“
