Cy Creek High girls basketball assistant coach Jennifer Alexander was promoted to head coach last month.
Alexander replaces Betty Maaskant, who coached the Lady Cougars since 1982. Last season, Cy Creek reached the regional quarterfinals for the first time in 14 years, falling to archrival and eventual Class 5A state champion, Cy-Fair.
“I have big shoes to fill,” Alexander said. “She was great last year to work for. I’m excited for the challenge of it.”

The Cy Creek High girls basketball team celebrated a milestone last February when they defeated Klein Collins to advance to the regional quarterfinals for the first time since 1996.
But the importance of that game transcended the victory on the court.
Lady Cougars head coach Betty Maaskant’s 95-year-old mother, Margaret Maaskant, attended the game at Cy Ranch High gym with the assistance of family members. It was her first time during the 2009-10 season to see a Cy Creek game in person.
She enjoys playing basketball and is also considering joining the Cy Creek High wrestling team.
But on Feb. 22, the 16-year-old Cy Creek sophomore was truly a “Sports Nut.” – shouting, encouraging and rooting for her school.
Gibson, who played on the Cy Creek Junior Varsity basketball team, and her friends proudly wore CCHS playoff T-Shirts that read “32 Minutes of Blood, Sweat and Tears.”
I’d have to describe Texas High School Basketball as February Frenzy. And Cy-Fair ISD (Class 5A-District 15) has some of the best teams in Greater Houston in both boys and girls basketball.
The girls basketball playoffs began last week, and the boys start this week.
Everyone in Texas knows about the district champion Cy-Fair High girls basketball team. They’re 26-1 and ranked No. 1 in the state with three consecutive Class 5A Final Four appearances over the past three seasons; they also have the top player in the nation, senior center Chiney Ogwumike, a Stanford signee.
The powerhouse from U.S. Hwy. 290 and Telge Road won its first two playoff games over Round Rock Stony Point and Spring Dekaney, by a combined 59 points.
The Cy Creek High girls basketball team had a special guests in the stands at Friday night’s second round playoff game against Klein Collins at Cy Ranch High gym.
Lady Cougars’ coach Betty Maaskant’s 95-year-old mother, Margaret, attended a Cy Creek game for the first time this season.
“The kids dedicated the game to her,” Maaskant said. “She’s been trying to (attend games), but she hasn’t been able to.”
Before the ball goes up, Cy Creek High girls basketball fans get the opportunity to hear J.D. Dodson.
The 23-year-old Klein resident has sang the Star Spangled Banner at most of the Lady Cougars’ home games this season.
“I love my country,” Dodson said. “Being able to lead a bunch of people in honoring the United States is a pretty cool feeling for me. I try to solidify the song itself. The way it’s written is how it should be sung.”

All four area girls basketball teams that played on Tuesday night won their playoff openers. Cy-Fair High (26-1), the top ranked team in the state, routed Round Rock Stony Point, 67-30, at Rudder High gym in Bryan. Senior center Chiney Ogwumike scored a game-high 29 points; Cassie Peoples and Aarika Reyes had 10 points apiece. “We started off a little sluggish, but I give credit to Stony Point,” Lady Bobcats coach Ann Roubique said. “They were excited to play us.”
On a dreary Thursday night, Texas State freshmen women’s basketball players Dawn Kiel and Ashley Shoemaker were still training at the Strahan Coliseum.
At this time last season, Kiel (a guard who graduated from Cy Creek) and Shoemaker (a Jersey Village alum who plays center) were on teams that were competing for the fourth and final playoff spot from Class 5A-District 15.
The Cy Creek High girls basketball team will be back in the postseason this winter.
The Lady Cougars (9-3) clinched the playoffs by completing a season sweep of Jersey Village (6-6), defeating the Lady Falcons, 49-37, on Friday night at JVHS.
Cy Woods also clinched a Class 5A-District 15 playoff spot on Friday.
The Cy Creek High girls basketball team defeated visiting Cy Ridge, 48-36, to move one step closer to returning to the playoffs.
The Lady Cougars (8-3), tied for third place in Class 5A-District 15 with Cy Woods (8-3), need the combination of a win or a Jersey Village loss over the final two games to reach the postseason.
The UIL Girls Basketball Playoffs won’t start until mid-February, but Friday’s Cy Creek-Jersey Village game at CCHS gym had a postseason flavor to it.
The Lady Cougars (13-9, 3-1) defeated the visiting Lady Falcons (9-10, 2-2) in a hard-fought, 49-41 game.
Last season, Jersey Village edged Cy Creek for the fourth and final playoff spot in Class 5A-District 15, reaching the postseason for the first time in seven years.
Varsity Girls Basketball at the

Exciting weekend for all 3 girls Basketball Teams!
The Varsity Basketball Team takes home second place in the 61st Conroe Tournament. On Saturday, November 14th the Lady Cougars faced a tough College Park team for the championship game. The Lady Cougars fell short in the last few seconds of the game losing narrowly 51-55 to give the Cavaliers their second consecutive championship win. The Lady Cougars put forth an outstanding performance throughout the tournament taking home two all tournament selections in Maddy McGlamery (Junior) and Karissa Hubbard (Senior).
The Junior Varsity Team competed in the Annual Alief JV Tournament November 12-14, defeating Hastings 46-8, Seven Lakes 32-30, Dobie 49-24 to play Langham Creek for the Championship. The Lady Cougars lost a heart breaker championship game 41-42 to receive 2nd place.
The Freshman Team also competed in the Annual Alief Freshman Tournament November 12-14, defeating Hastings 60-14, Seven Lakes 51-39, Elkins 49-36 to arrive at the championship game. Hightower was no match for the Creek fish as they took the Championship with a 52-11 win.
